Embrace Failure as Your Mentor

Mistakes are the portals of discovery. James Joyce

Many practitioners rely on ingrained and polished routines, involving a repertoire of tactics and strategies.  No matter how reliable, practice routines are not flawless.

We may disregard or minimize moments when our approach fails; or worse, attribute the problem to our clients.  But we all make mistakes.  We all deal with confusing situations that leave us questioning our knowledge and skills.

Reflective practitioners accept their fallibility—they know they will make mistakes.  More importantly, they commit to learning from those mistakes in order to improve their effectiveness.

I really don't think life is about the I-could-have-beens. Life is only about the I-tried-to- do.

I don't mind the failure but I can't imagine that I'd forgive myself if I didn't try.  Nikki Giovanni
